Year 5 & 6 (Upper Key Stage 2)
In Upper Key Stage 2, we continue to deliver a curriculum that is built on strong pedagogical principles, with every child encouraged to understand and achieve their potential. At the start of the academic year, our focus revolves around the development of the children’s wellbeing, centering on a growth mind-set approach. This is designed to strengthen the children’s resolve to meet the demands and challenges of the curriculum, with resilience and determination, whilst also understanding the support they have to help them along. Throughout the year the children revisit key concepts and develop further strategies to help build up their emotional resilience.
Children are given the responsibility to take a greater ownership for their learning and are given the tools to become effective peer mentors and coaches to others. Knowledge is built through encouragement to develop curiosity about the world. This is achieved by engaging with a variety of experiences, such as immersive learning opportunities, the chance to speak to and question experts and investigative tasks tackling real world problems. This skill development leads to children who are confident to take their next step on their life journey, both academically and pastorally, towards being effective learners and global citizens.
As they enter the last term before secondary school, the children are prepared for a smooth transition through a range of activities to explore life within the next phase of education. This will address any worries or concerns and ensure their readiness to embrace new opportunities.
